In my house, potatoes are a staple part of our diet! They’re just so filling and versatile, and not to mention cheap! You can’t go wrong with a big plate of sweet potato fries or a steamy bowl of leek and potato soup. But then there’s also fluffy gnocchi, crunchy Hasselbacks, and latkes to consider. To be honest, it’s hard to choose just one. Instead, I have 33 of my favorites right here for you to try. Trust me; you’ll want to make them all!
Potato Recipes for Breakfast
There’s nothing quite like a table full of food in the morning. And nothing goes better with a plate of bacon and eggs than a few tasty potato recipes. You know hash browns are on the list, but I have a couple of extra-special recipes that you’ll just have to try out!
1. Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole
Cracker Barrel is known for its comfort food, and nothing is more comforting on a Sunday morning than this sensational hash brown casserole. Full disclosure: this isn’t healthy. It’s loaded with cream of chicken soup, butter, and cheese, along with the potatoes, of course. But then, that’s how you know it’s gonna taste good, right?
2. Cheesy Bacon and Egg Hash (Breakfast Skillet)
You can’t go wrong with eggs, potatoes, bacon, and cheese, especially when they’re all cooked in the same pan! A skillet is ideal for this since it will help your potatoes form a gorgeous golden crust. If you don’t have a cast-iron skillet, put one on your birthday/Christmas list and just make this in the oven for now.
3. Easy Parmesan Breakfast Potatoes
This dish is similar to the above recipe. The difference is, it has red pepper and onion for added flavor, plus garlic powder, parsley, rosemary, and smoked paprika. Since fresh parmesan is so strong, you won’t need too much over the top, making it a great alternative if you’re trying to cut down on calories.
4. Sweet Potato Frittata
A frittata is like a fast quiche cooked and served in a skillet and doesn’t have a pie crust. They’re pretty easy to throw together, and this recipe is particularly filling due to the sweet potato in the mix. Between the onions, peppers, spinach, and Gouda cheese, this is a salty and savory treat to start your day off right.
5. Easy Breakfast Skillet
Frozen hash browns are fantastic to have in the house and will make your breakfast prep lightning fast. This recipe includes bacon and sausage for something extra special. But it would be easy to keep it vegetarian-friendly and just add in a selection of chopped veggies. Tomatoes and zucchini would be lovely.
Potato Soup Recipes
When I’m looking for a hearty soup to keep me warm and fill me up all day, I always look to potato soup recipes. Not only do potatoes make your soup a little more substantial, but they can also help to make it thicker and more creamy.
6. Paula Deen’s Crockpot Potato Soup
This soup is so creamy and substantial, and better yet, needs just 10 minutes of prep! It really is as simple as tossing everything in your slow cooker and letting it cook. Toward the end of the 5 hours, you’ll add cream cheese for a silky smooth finish. Just remember to chop up your cream cheese, so it melts faster.
7. Sweet Potato Soup
This stunning soup is a blend of creamy sweet potatoes, carrots, ginger, and some lovely warm spices. It’s the perfect cold-weather warmer, and though it’s plenty filling, you won’t be able to stop at just one bowl! I find the mix of garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, and paprika to be just perfect, but I’ve also added a dash of cinnamon in the past, too.
8. Potato Leek Soup
This is one of my favorite soups of all time! The combination is so simple but effective, and it’s incredible with a crusty piece of buttered bread. I find chicken broth adds just the right seasoning to the mix, but you can use vegetable if you want to make it vegetarian-friendly. Top tip: if you’re using bay leaves and other fresh herbs, try using these drawstring soup bags, so it’s easier to remove them before you blitz the soup.
Potato Recipes for Dinner
In our busy lives, it’s so important to have some go-to dinner recipes to make weeknights a little easier. And what could be better than a few good potato recipes? They’re pretty cheap, always available, and pretty darn versatile to boot!
9. Leftover Ham and Potato Casserole
The best thing about this recipe is that it’s full of stuff you already have in the fridge and pantry. There’s no need to rush to the store, just get it all in the dish and bake. You’ll pre-cook the potatoes in some water so the casserole cooks evenly, which will give you the time to make the cheese and ham sauce. Don’t worry; it’s just a super simple roux made with butter, flour, milk, and cheese.
10. Tater Tot Casserole Recipe
I’m sure you still have a bag of tots at the back of your freezer – don’t we all? Well, it’s time to pull them out and make this nostalgic potato dish that the kids and grown-ups will go crazy for. The recipe calls for mushroom soup for a boost of flavor, but I’ve used cream of chicken and cream of broccoli in the past, and it came out great.
11. Sweet Potato Dinner Skillet
Who said hash browns are just for breakfast? When you need a fast and tasty dinner, I say there’s nothing better than a skillet full of crunchy sweet potatoes, greens, and eggs. Rather than heaps of cheddar cheese, this recipe calls for feta, which adds such a nice, creamy finish to the dish. I also scattered some chopped green onions over the top, too.
12. Olive Garden Chicken Gnocchi Soup Recipe
Gnocchi is a terrific pasta alternative that will add so much fabulous texture to your dish. These little potato pillows will melt in your mouth and keep you full all day long. When served in this creamy soup, this is almost like a bowl of chicken and dumplings – only lighter. I like to use rotisserie chicken in this since it’s already super flavorful, but it’s just as easy to quickly cook your own.
Potato Side Dish Recipes
If you ask me, no dinner is complete without some kind of potato side dish. From fries and mash to wedges and baked potatoes, they go with pretty much everything. What’s your favorite? Mine’s coming up next, and it’s a good one!
13. Scalloped Potatoes Recipe
It might just be a simple layering of potatoes, onions, cheese, butter, and milk, but it’s truly a potato side dish sent from heaven. Ideally, you’ll use a mandolin to ensure your potatoes and onions are nice and thin, so they’ll cook perfectly and nothing will burn. The great thing about this recipe is that you won’t need to make a separate sauce. Once it’s layered right, it will cook and thicken in the oven, saving you time and dishes!
14. Hasselback Potatoes Recipe
Hasselback potatoes were first made in Sweden back in the 1950s. Since then, they’ve popped up all over, and there are so many unique varieties. The trick is to use Russet potatoes and to cut and cook them with a touch of oil before adding any fun extras. That way, nothing will burn while you’re waiting for the potatoes to cook. Cheese and bacon are popular choices, but they’re also super tasty with some simple garlic and rosemary butter.
15. Oven-Baked Potato Wedges
Wedges are such a great French fries alternative, and they have a much heartier feel to them. Ideally, they should be lovely and crisp on the edges with plenty of tender potatoes in the middle. An easy way to coat your wedges is to chop the potatoes and add them to a Ziploc bag with onion powder, garlic powder, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Shake it up until everything is coated before laying them evenly on a lined baking sheet.
16. Homemade Tater Tots
Tater tots are a family favorite, but they can be a touch bland when you buy the frozen kind. Making your own is such a great way to ensure you’re left with crunchy tots that are full of herbs and spices for something extra special. This recipe calls for garlic, onion, dill, and oregano, but feel free to play with that however you like.
17. Sweet Potato Fries
If you’ve ever made sweet potato fries and been disappointed by a tray full of soggy orange sticks, I feel you. Sweet potatoes have a high moisture content, so it’s not unusual to see your fries come sad and a little soggy. How do you fix that? First, cut your fries evenly, so everything cooks at the same time. Next, don’t add any salt until they’re cooked as it draws out moisture. But for some super crispy fries, try tossing them in cornstarch. Trust me; it makes a world of difference.
18. Lighthouse Inn Potatoes Copycat Recipe
If you’ve ever been to Connecticut, you may have heard of the Lighthouse Inn. And if you heard of the Inn, you must have heard of these sensational potatoes. Between the tender potatoes, creamy sauce, and crunchy cheesy topping, these are pretty close to perfect.
Potato Recipes From Around the World
No list of potato recipes would be complete without looking across the pond! One of my favorite things about traveling is getting to explore different foods and cultures. And one thing is for sure: potatoes are an international love language!
19. Irish Mashed Potatoes (Colcannon)
This twist on mashed potatoes will change your life! If you’ve ever thought mash was a little bland, or if you’ve ever made way too much and can’t face another dinner with plain old mashed potatoes – this one’s for you! Colcannon is mashed potatoes mixed with cabbage, greens, and sometimes bacon, too! In England, they call it bubble and squeak. Either way, it’s pretty amazing.
21. Greek Lemon Potatoes
This recipe calls for lemon juice, salt, pepper, chicken stock, and garlic – lots and lots of garlic. It’s an extra step, but it’s so worth it in the end! Once they’re tender, they get finished in the skillet until golden brown and crisp. Layer some onions, garlic, and butter over the top and let the flavors infuse. [pin]https://www.pinterest.com/pin/234961305548579933/" data-pin-terse=“false”> You’ll braise your potatoes in the ingredients mentioned above until they’re fork-tender. To achieve that crunchy exterior, you’ll then roast them on a separate tray until golden.
22. Classic French Aligot
If you like your mashed potatoes creamy and cheesy, then you’ll go nuts over this dish! It’s pretty simple but so effective. Once you have your potatoes cooked and drained, you’ll add over a hot mix of crème fraîche and garlic. Add your pot back on the heat to cook everything through, and then slowly incorporate the cheese. Mix until smooth and the cheese is melted.
23. German Potato Salad
Unlike the potato salad you and I are used to, the Germans do it a little differently. First, it’s full of creamy red potatoes, bacon, and red onion, making it salty and peppery. But it’s the tangy dressing that I love the most. If you want something a little less mayo-centric, you’ll have to try this one.
24. Classic Latkes
Latkes are a type of potato pancake, usually made with milk, eggs, and matzo meal. They’re fried in hot oil until wonderfully crisp and impossible to resist. These get most of their amazing flavor from the use of chicken schmaltz, which is rendered chicken fat that is sometimes flavored with onion.
25. Aloo Gobi
Literally translated to potato and cauliflower, respectively, this spiced fried dish is something you’ll want at your next Indian feast. It’s fantastic as a stand-alone vegetarian dish or will work wonders as a side to your curry or Tandoori chicken.
Classic Potato Recipes
As I’ve mentioned before, potatoes are so versatile, making them such a classic ingredient. I’m sure you’ve had most of these potato recipes before, and no doubt you’ll be excited to try some of the new ones. But no list of potato recipes would be complete without some true classics that will take you right back to your childhood.
26. Sweet Potato Casserole
It’s a holiday staple dish, but there’s nothing saying you can’t serve up a sweet potato casserole on a random Wednesday night. This recipe is especially indulgent, incorporating evaporated milk, cinnamon, and buttery pecans to the mix.
27. Steakhouse Style Garlic Mashed Potatoes
I much prefer my mash with a bit of texture, and if it’s got some garlic in there too, then all the better! My favorite thing about this recipe is that you’ll leave the skins on. Not only does this add roughage and texture, but it gives the potatoes some lovely pops of color.
28. Whipped Sweet Potatoes
I’ve known a few picky eaters in my day, but none of them have ever said no to my whipped sweet potatoes. Top tip: make extra to mash and freeze. You can then pull it out when you’re having a busy day or even use it to make a sweet potato pie at the last minute!
29. Roasted Red Potatoes
Red potatoes are far less starchy than other varieties. This makes them ideal for roasting, as they’ll hold their shape much better. Of course, red potatoes are harder to crisp, but you shouldn’t have any issues if you finish them under the broiler.
30. Wingstop Fries Copycat Recipe
It’s weird to see sugar on the list of ingredients for French fries, but you have to trust the process! For the best-ever fries, be sure to cut them evenly and try soaking for a few hours in water. This will help remove some of the starch to end up crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside.
31. Shepherd’s Pie
I grew up eating shepherd’s pie, and it’s something I crave as soon as there’s a chill in the air. This quick version needs just a handful of ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep time. You can have this bubbling on the table in just half an hour when you use a frozen veggie blend and a jar of sofrito!
32. Homemade Potato Chips
Potato chips are so hard to resist! But when you get that craving, why not try making your own? Don’t worry: no deep fryer needed! These are oven-baked and truly to die for. I love the simple oil and salt flavoring, but you could just as easily toss them in a little ranch dry mix.
33. Classic Potato Salad
Potato salad is always the first to go, no matter how much I put out. That creamy dish is too good to say no to, and it goes well with everything from grilled chicken to hot dogs. This recipe has a delicious sauce made by mixing mayonnaise, dijon mustard, red onion, lemon juice, pickles, and paprika. Plus, you’ll add chives, celery, and hard-boiled eggs for lovely texture and flavor. Click on a star to rate it!
