I’ve broken down all the low carb staples into pantry categories below, to make things easy to locate.

Essential Fats

Fats are essential on any low carb or keto diet – they are major keto staples! Choose minimally processed animal fats and oils. Avoid corn, soy, and canola oil. TIP: You don’t have to buy every type of fat here, but a good mix is at least one liquid oil (olive or avocado oil) and at least one that’s solid at room temperature (coconut oil, butter, ghee, or lard). In recipes, liquid fats are often interchangeable other liquids, and solids with other solids.

Low Carb Flours

A low carb diet doesn’t mean you have to give up baked goods! Just replace wheat flour with low carb flours – and find recipes that use them. Almond flour is the most common low carb flour (make sure you get blanched and finely ground!), but there are other alternatives as well. Be sure to browse my low carb almond flour recipes and low carb coconut flour recipes.

Wholesome Yum Blanched Almond Flour – Blanched and super fine, for the best texture in baked goods. It’s one of the first keto ingredients I recommend stocking in your pantry. Wholesome Yum Organic Coconut Flour Wholesome Yum Psyllium Husk Powder – Makes keto breads chewy, and unlike some others, this one has the highest fiber content and won’t turn your baked goods purple. Sunflower seed meal Golden flax seed meal – Used as a binder, and also to make flax eggs

Low Carb Sweeteners

I recommend natural, sugar-free sweeteners for keto or low carb lifestyles. My favorite is monk fruit allulose blend, but plain allulose and erythritol are also good. In fact, I created my own line of Besti keto sweeteners because I wanted ones that taste like sugar and act like sugar! If you are just starting to stock your pantry, sweeteners are one of the major keto ingredients that will make it easier to transition. Buy one granulated or crystallized sweetener for most applications and one powdered sweetener to cover recipes that need a smooth texture, like sauces, dressings, frostings, and so on. For more information on all the different low carb sweeteners, check the guide on sugar substitutes and sweetener conversion calculator.

Low Carb Baking Ingredients

You’ll want to have these low carb staples for baking on hand! Baking powder and xanthan gum will help with lift and texture, cocoa powder and chocolate will cover all your chocolate needs, and extracts add flavor.

Low Carb Pantry Proteins

Chicken and beef broth are classic staples in soups, sauces, and more. But, often I prefer to use their bone broth equivalents for more flavor and collagen benefits. You can also buy gelatin or collagen directly in powder form, and the former makes a great natural thickener in baking, sauces, and more.

Low Carb Dairy Alternatives

Even though low carb and keto diets allow dairy, many people prefer to avoid them. Even if you don’t, regular milk is high in carbs, so you need something else instead. These dairy-free alternatives will replace milk in your collection of keto ingredients, but if you can tolerate it, heavy cream is fine to use as well.

Nuts & Seeds

Nuts and seeds make great keto snacks or additions to recipes for a little crunch. Watch the higher carb count nuts, like peanuts, pistachios, and especially cashews which are best avoided.

Almonds Macadamia nuts Peanuts Pecans Pistachios Walnuts Sunflower seeds Pumpkin seeds Hemp seeds Chia seeds Sesame seeds

Nut Butters

You don’t have to buy every single type of nut butter on this list! Just choose your favorite kinds to include in your keto staples. They are great for snacking, and also usually interchangeable in recipes. Check ingredient labels and avoid any with added sugar.

Other Keto Staples For Your Pantry

There are a few other items that you’ll need for a well stocked low carb pantry, but they don’t fit into a particular category. Tomatoes do have some carbs, but are a very common staple in recipes, so several shelf-stable versions are included here.
